Real Madrid boss Zinedine opted to rest key midfield duo Luka Modric and Toni Kroos for the La Liga clash. The Frenchman was happy to have won the game and to have given Modric and Kroos a much-needed breather.
“There are loads of games. Luka and Toni were rested today and that’s very important,” Zidane told reporters. “Antonio Blanco came in and he did really well. He did a good job.
“It was a hard-fought win. I’m pleased for all the players because it’s not easy to do what we’ve been doing in every game. We kept another clean sheet and scored two goals. We have to be pleased about that. It was a good win today.”
Zidane’s admission that it was “important” to rest Modric and Kroos is a major hint in regards to his team selection against Chelsea.
“Today we were very good physically and mentally because when we finished the game we were already thinking about recovery,” he added. “We know that we play every three days and all the details are important when it comes to recovering our strength and that’s what we’re taking into every game. aToday we were physically very good. Let’s enjoy this victory, we’ll rest and then we’ll play again on Wednesday.”
