Wolves newcomer Daniel Podence has opened about his decision to quit boyhood club Sporting 18 and has admitted it has now been vindicated.
The 24-year-old winger, who moved to Molineux from Olympiakos in January in a deal worth £17million, left Sporting on bad conditions in 2018.
Podence was part of the Sporting squad, alongside Wolves teammate Rui Patricio, which was attacked at the club’s training ground by ultras in May of that year.
The Portuguese the decided to end his contract at Sporting, citing 'just cause', and joined Greek club Olympiakos in a transfer facilitated by Jorge Mendes. Sporting were later compensated by Olympiakos to the sum of €7million.
In an interview with
Portuguese TV channel Canal 11, Podence said:
“I left very sad, in the worst possible way. For everything: how the season ended, for having been injured so long, for not playing and for not appreciating what the Portuguese player in the team is.”
"I was criticised a lot, many names…," he added.
"I have to live with it, but today I can look back and say that it was the right decision I have made in my life.
“Because it took me to a place and to a huge club and I got the games I got, and to be sold after €20million for the Premier League, to go to the national team... I think it was the right decision.”
