Some of the world’s top players are into the final year of their deals, meaning they could leave at the end of the season, in the summer of 2020.
Many will be scratching around lower league sides in the hope of a deal, but there are also some stars who are now up for grabs without a fee.
Here are the top 10 free agents in 2020, by Transfermarkt.
Luka Modric (Real Madrid)
Modric, 33, could decide it is time to move on, as his deal runs out in 2020. The Croatia international continues to be linked with amove away from Real Madrid. The Spanish club are looking to add Modric in the swap deal for Tottenham Christian Eriksen but remains to be seen whether Modric would be willing to go along with a contract which would see him move from Real Madrid to his former club Tottenham.
Last year, Modric had been linked with a move to Inter Milan and the club’s chief football officer Zvonimir Boban has confirmed the interest, though stated that the Real Madrid man didn’t want to leave the Bernabeu after a bad season last term.
Edinson Cavani (PSG)

In the summer, Cavani has emerged as a target for Manchester United. Cavani would add the drive and dynamism to the front line of the club he will decide to join.
Dries Mertens (Napoli)
Mertens’ only trophies with Napoli so far remain the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana from 2014. There have been suggestions that Mertens’ association with Napoli could come to an end in the summer.
In total, Mertens has made 289 apperances for the Serie A outfit, scoring 114 goals and providing 68 assists. Manchester United are keen on to sign the 32-year-old.
Mario Gotze (Borussia Dortmund)
Gotze had failed a move to Bayern Munich and had been linked with a move to Liverpool but he stayed at Borussia Dortmund.
The 27-year-old’s contract expires next summer nut it is reported that the German side are in talks over an extension.
