“Too Early”: London Mayor Sadiq Khan gives his VERDICT on Premier League’s possible restart in June

London Mayor Sadiq Khan thinks it is too early to play the Premier League matches in London. The season, which has been stopped since March due to the coronavirus pandemic, will reportedly restart on June 12.  Initially, the ‘Restart Project’ included an option to play the remaining 92 fixtures (22 of them - in London) in 8-9 selected venues. Most clubs, representing London, including Tottenham and Chelsea, have supported this idea. However, the controversies caused by the disagreement from the clubs of the bottom half, will cause the league to cancel the plan of introducing ‘neutral’ venues.  Now the British media reports every team will play their home matches at their stadiums. Khan is keen for the League to resume, but doesn’t want ‘any extra burden on the NHS and emergency services’.  “Sadiq is extremely keen for the Premier League and professional sport in general to resume. However, with the country still in the grips of this crisis, and hundreds of people dying every day, he believes that it is too early to be discussing the resumption of the Premier League and top-flight sport in the capital.” Mayor’s office said (cited by Evening Standard) “As a Liverpool fan, Sadiq of course wants the Premier League to return, but it can only happen when it is safe to do so, and it cannot place any extra burden on the NHS and emergency services.”
