Timo Werner issues promise to Frank Lampard over Chelsea goal target

Timo Werner is adamant that he can become Frank Lampard’s leading goalscorer for Chelsea this season. The 24-year-old was signed in a £47.5 million deal from RB Leipzig in June. The player unofficially opened his account at the weekend as he scored in a pre-season friendly against Brighton. Werner shone in his impressive final season for the Bundesliga club with 34 goals in 45 appearances. And the striker is confident he can replicate the form he showed at RB Leipzig for Chelsea. Werner said at a press conference with Germany’s national team: "I think that’s more of an incentive. ‘What the club demands of me is no less than I demand of myself. The club has brought me to score goals and after 28 [league] goals for Leipzig I have not come to London to say a few is enough for me now. I want to prove it there as well as at Leipzig. For me, this feels less like pressure, but also from the club side more like anticipation that I can help celebrate successes." Werner also admits he will need to physically adjust to the Premier League. "The defenders in England are more robust than in the Bundesliga," said Werner. "It’s very, very, much more physical in the Premier League. I have to develop myself and take on this physical aspect. English football is very fast. That suits me because I am too have reasonably good speed."
