Novak Djokovic will officially pass his ‘World No 1’ title to Daniil Medvedev next week, after suffering a shock defeat.
On Thursday, Djokovic faced Jiri Vesely in Dubai in the quarter-finals, where the Serb ended up losing to the World No. 123 with a score of 6-4 7-6 (4).
After yesterday’s match, US Open champion Medvedev, who’s through the quarter-finals of the Mexican Open, will now take Nole’s position next week.
“Unfortunately, wasn’t my day. I congratulate Jiri,” the 20-time major winner said in press afterwards.
“He played better. He just went for his shots. His serve was big. His whole game was big.”
The 34-year-old also took to Twitter, to congartulate the newly crowned World No. 1.
He wrote: “Congratulations also to a very deserving @DaniilMedwed, who will now become world number 1. 👏🙌”
