Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta declared himself happy with Willian's performance, after the Manchester City defeat, despite him being relatively uninvolved while playing in an unusual position as a centre-forward.
The Gunners suffered a 1-0 defeat to City on Saturday as Raheem Sterling scored the only goal of the game. Willian started from the first minutes however he was replaced by Alexandre Lacazette in the 69th minute.
He told Sky Sports of Willian: "It was part of the game plan, the situation we wanted to use. We wanted to create, and I think it was a good match for him."
And he added in his post-match press conference: "We need to have the versatility to play in different formations occupying different spaces.
"It was a game for him, the way City plays and the way they track the opponents and the spaces that can be used. He was really convinced as well.
"It was obviously really hard to leave two strikers on the bench but it was a tactical decision."
