Manchester United are looking to sign a new centre-back this summer as a potential partner for Harry Maguire. Real Madrid’s veteran defender Rafael Varane is among the candidates.
The World Cup winner has been on United’s radar when Jose Mourinho was in charge of the club. The Portuguese specialist wanted to sign Varane, as he knew him from his time at Real Madrid.
Mourinho and Ed Woodward held a meeting before a 2018 summer window in which the latter identified Varane and PSG’s Marco Veratti as two players United could potentially bring in. But Varane’s stock was already high even before he won the World Cup with his France national team.
According to the Mirror, United are set to make a summer bid for Varane. The 28-year-old is about to enter the final year of his contract in Madrid so United are hopeful a fee in the region of £40 million will be enough to bring him to Old Trafford.
