Liverpool transfer decision will force Jurgen Klopp to break lifetime habit

Chelsea are expected to confirm the signing of Germany striker Timo Werner this week, marking the official end of the speculation involving Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp was a keen admirer of the player, but the release clause put a stumbling block to their efforts to sign Werner. For the second successive close season, the Reds could be going into the new campaign looking almost the same as how they ended the previous one. Speaking on the Analysing Anfield podcast, Josh Williams explained what that would mean for Liverpool - and for Klopp and his coaching staff. He said: "Klopp is very much a realist and he is very happy with what he has currently got, but it’s going to be a task for him now to keep finding solutions with the same tools. The more you use a set formation as a system, the more the opposition starts to pick on exactly where the threats are and how to stop you. "If Werner was to come in, it would have given Liverpool the option to really mix it up with a 4-2-3-1. You can play a front four of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Werner - that’s frightening. "Against 12 of the 19 Premier League teams, that would have been fine - they would have blown most opponents away. I’m not sure Liverpool will eventually end up with that system but I’d be surprised that if when Klopp leaves in a number of years if they are still playing with a 4-3-3 - usually, you have to evolve with the times. "From an opposition perspective, the more Liverpool stick with what they have got, the less unpredictable Liverpool will be, and the more creative Klopp is going to have to be."
