Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson
believes Pep Guardiola has a wish to win the Champions League before he leaves Manchester City.
The last Premier League season was a glorious one for Manchester City with the head of the Spaniard but his side failed their Champions League season after being defeated by Tottenham in the semi-finals.
Thompson has a feeling that City are close to winning in this Champions League after their last year’s misfortune.
He said: “You have to have the heartbreak before you taste success. They have got close, but not close enough, so they could go further. They have the squad and have two teams which could play in the Champions League itself!”
The Premier League loss to Norwich is left behind and tonight the Citizens are to compete against Shakhtar Donetsk in their Champions League opener.
Aymeric Laporte and John Stones will miss the match because of their injuries, so Guardiola has to play being left with only two fit centre backs.
