Manchester City will not include Gabriel Jesus, Bernardo Silva or Riyad Mahrez in any deal to sign Lionel Messi. The Blues could be facing a club-record fee to bring in the Barcelona star.
That has led to speculation that they will add players as part of a package to land the 33-year-old. Young defender Eric Garcia, who is a target for Barcelona, will figure in any negotiations between the clubs, after he gave notice to City earlier this month that he wants to leave.
But the idea that City would throw Jesus, Bernardo or Mahrez into the deal is a long way wide of the mark. Jesus and Bernardo are very much part of City’s future plans.
Not only does Pep Guardiola have great faith in Jesus, to offload him as part of a Messi deal would leave City facing another headache next summer, when the search for an eventual Aguero replacement is likely to begin in earnest. The same goes for Bernardo. Mahrez is another who will not be sold, or swapped, in any circumstance.
