"Close" – Premier League defender breaks silence on failed Leicester City transfer

Southampton centre-back Jannik Vestergaard has admitted he “was close” to a January transfer move amid interest from Leicester City. Vestergaard was targeted by the Foxes at the end of the winter window as Brendan Rodgers looked to strengthen his backline. However, Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl blocked the move. “I was close to a club change last winter, but the club and the manager said they would keep me,” Vestergaard told Ekstra Bladet in his native Denmark. “At this stage I have not talked to the club about next season and about the future, so I do not know what can happen.” Whether City return for Vestergaard is also up for debate, with the club expressing interest in several centre-halves since Maguire moved to Manchester United.
