Worrying Aubameyang admission for Arsenal ahead of their Europa League clash

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang celebrates after completing his hat-trick

Former Chelsea midfielder claims, if Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is not scoring goals, then Arsenal are basically playing with ten men. Aubameyang has scored 11 goals this season.

“Your team is pretty much designed around those with the ability to win you a football match,” Townsend told Drive on talkSPORT. “There’s no question that Aubameyang has the ability to win Arsenal games of football because he’s a brilliant goalscorer. He has an astonishing record and he’s up there with the very best.

“But there is a ‘however’ here. If he doesn’t score a goal, he does nothing. Zero. He gives you nothing. I don’t see him giving anything else. Now, the question here is, can Arsenal possibly get back to where they want to be with a striker that is a brilliant goalscorer, that is an amazing finisher, but doesn’t do anything else?”

Townsend insists Aubameyang is a different type of striker to other Premier League finishers.

He added: “People will ask, does he need to do anything else? I think he does. The Alan Shearers, the Ian Wrights, the Thierry Henrys, the top strikers gave you goals, aggression, a willingness and a desire and never-say-die attitude. I’m watching Aubameyang and he is a very accomplished goalscorer, but if he doesn’t score a goal, Arsenal are playing with 10 men.”
