Why the £50k-a-week player was 'worried' about joining Wolves this summer?

Matt Doherty has shared his thoughts on his return to Wolves, admitting he initially had some doubts but ultimately saw it as a 'no-brainer.'

The full-back made his way back to the Midlands in the summer, becoming the second signing of the season after departing from Atletico Madrid. The move raised a few eyebrows, as Doherty had been known for his exceptional performance as a wing-back, a role that the Wanderers had abandoned.

However, the decision to reacquire the Irishman was a result of strong interest from manager Julen Lopetegui and the club's board. Since his return, the £50,000-a-week star has made seven appearances for the Molineux outfit, with three of them being starts, including two in the Carabao Cup.

Encouragingly, Gary O'Neil's side have recently reintroduced the wing-back system, which aligns with the 31-year-old's strengths, positioning him as an important squad player for the team's future endeavors.

The former Tottenham star expressed his feelings about his return during an open training session at Molineux, stating that he did have some initial doubts.

“You’re a little bit wary at the start about going back on what I’ve done before, you know? I was just a bit worried if I would kind of ruin what I did before, if the second spell doesn’t go as well and stuff like that.

“But once you get over that, it was kind of a no-brainer in the end.” stated the player via Wolves official website.
