"We’ve been working": Director explains why they failed to sign Tottenham's Steven Bergwijn

Ajax director Marc Overmars has explained the reason behind Steven Bergwijn's failed transfer. The Dutch club have been linked with the move for the 24-year-old winger this January, however, the Spurs' demands were too high amid the rise of another covid strain, Omicron, the director claims. “That’s no secret. We wanted to have him at Ajax for now and also for the future,” Overmars said about Bergwijn, translated by Voetbal Primeur.  Ajax's wish to bring the Lilywhites' man to Johan Cruijff ArenA was also related to their academy graduate Brian Brobbey's fitness issues. “(Our Bergwijn interest) was also related to Brian Brobbey’s injury. We wanted speed in the team and Brobbey has that. But if he is gone, you have to work with that,” Overmars added. “You have to remain realistic. All clubs have had two tough years. We, as management, did not think it was right (to pay such a big fee).”  “Normally I have no problem with (big fees) and that was fine with Haller last year. But now, the time is just a bit uncertain.” “It’s no secret that we’ve been working on Bergwijn.”
