Virgil van Dijk speaks out on a chance of winning the Ballon d'Or

Virgil van Dijk is one of the seven Liverpool stars that has been included in the 30-man Ballon D'Or shortlist along with Firmino, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum. The Liverpool defender won the UEFA Player of the Year in August and was favorite to win The Best FIFA Men's Player award, but he finished second as Lionel Messi won the award. As the Ballon D'Or ceremony date is getting closer, Van Dijk was asked about winning the most prestigious individual award. Van Dijk said: "Can I win? There is going to be an answer to that on December 2!" "For me to be called in the same breath, for last season's performances, to win the Ballon d'Or is something special. We'll see what is going to come out of it. "[I need to] keep playing, week in, week out, at the highest level I can play at. I try to keep improving myself in training with the experience I gain from every game, and I just stay fit as well. "That's a massive part of playing at a consistent level - staying fit and hopefully playing all the big games - but it's not easy. "For example, we're now playing four games in 11 days. We're travelling and staying in hotels and you need to watch what you eat, drink and make sure you recover well. "I am not complaining, not at all, but you need to look after yourself because at the end of the day, the people are coming to the stadium to watch you play and it doesn't matter if you had a cold the day before - they want you to turn up on matchday. "That is why it is very important to look after yourself and a big part of that is staying fit. Luckily, so far, I've been doing that pretty well and hopefully I can keep doing it." via LiverpoolEcho
