Virgil van Dijk crowned PFA Player of the Year ahead of Raheem Sterling

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has been crowned the PFA Player of the Year for the 2018/19 season. Due to the Dutchman’s defence the Reds conceded just 20 goals in their 36 matches so far this term, keeping 20 clean sheets. https://twitter.com/PFA/status/1122616766725861376 Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling was in the race for the award alongside Van Dijk but the Dutchman was elected as the standout performer. Sterling may have missed out on the main prize but he was named the PFA Young Player of the Year. The City forward beat the likes of Declan Rice, Marcus Rashford and Bernardo Silva to the prize. The award was voted for by the players themselves and was last season won by Mohamed Salah who had previously given the game away with a tweet congratulating his team mate hours before the official confirmation. https://twitter.com/MoSalah/status/1122595526082473986 Van Dijk joined Liverpool, in a £75million deal from Southampton 18 months ago. He also was joined by four Liverpool team-mates in the PFA team of the year in Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson and Sadio Mane.
