Liverpool will have to break their transfer record to secure Darwin Nunez’s transfer, according to The Athletic journalist James Pearce.

The Reds’ are in search of a new attacker as Sadio Mane is set to leave Anfield this summer. Amid a number of options, Jurgen Klopp’s side consider the Benfica attacker as a priority target for the summer.

Pearce claims Benfica have set a €100 million (£85.2 million) asking price on their star. Liverpool’s current transfer record is the signing of Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for £75 million.

The Premier League giants are yet to table a bid for Nunez, who has also been linked with the move to Manchester United.

Klopp has already shared his thoughts on the striker when the 22-year-old shined for his team against the Reds in the Champions League quarter-final.

“Extremely good looking boy, huh? And a decent player as well. Really good. I knew before, of course, but he played pretty much in front of me with his tough battles with Ibrahima Konate,” the German manager said.

“He was physically strong, quick, was calm around his finish. I always say in these situations if he is healthy, it’s a big career ahead of him.”
