Sven Mislintat reveals why Matteo Guendouzi became so key to Arsenal

Rennes player Matteo Guendouzi joined Arsenal in the summer transfer window and became one of the most important signings for the club. The deal was made due to Sven Mislinatat who did his best to bring the French teenager to the Emirates. “It was an important transfer for us because we wanted to show the world that we were still the old Arsenal which gives opportunities to young players,” explained Mislintat, during an interview with Zeit. Of the five summer additions, he was the only teenager to arrive as the club focused on bringing in more established talent like Sokratis, Bernd Leno and Stephan Lichtsteiner. Arsenal’s head of recruitment also revealed what was the key factor to eye the wonderkid. “I saw him when Lorient were still in the French first division. I like Lorient, they always produce interesting players. “Matteo stood out with his long hair and his personality. But I concentrated on his weaknesses, were they trainable? Matteo ran unnecessarily across the whole pitch, but I was sure that it was only a matter of time before he learns when to run.”
