Ruud Gullit explains why Virgil van Dijk will never win the Ballon d'Or

Ajax and AC Milan legend Ruud Gullit has stated that 2019 was the best opportunity for his compatriot Virgil van Dijk to ever claim the Ballon d'Or award. Virgil van Dijk is undoubtedly the best centre-back in world football at this current moment in time. In the 2019 Ballon d'Or Awards, van Dijk could have become the first defender since Fabio Cannavaro to win the award, but in the end placed second, just seven votes behind the winner Lionel Messi. But, according to the former coach of Chelsea and Newcastle United, his compatriot's time has already passed, at least in terms of winning the Ballon d'Or. When asked whether van Dijk should have won the Ballon d'Or, Gullit repled: "Yeah I think he should. But, you know, you can't say Messi didn't deserve it either, but if there was a possibility to make a stand for a defender, it was this year." Source- JOE
