Ronald Koeman speaks out on Virgil Van Dijk’s Ballon d’Or battle with Lionel Messi
Netherlands national team head coach Ronald Koeman says this is the right time to give Ballon d’Or to a defender, meaning that Virgil Van Dijk deserves the most important individual trophy of the season.
Van Dijk has been incredible this season. Not a single player managed to pass him with a dribble, which just emphasizes his massive role for Jurgen Klopp’s side, that won Champions League.
Reds beat Tottenham Hotspur in the final at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium 2-0 due to Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi goals.
“He deserves to win the Ballon d’Or,” Koeman said (via Fox Sports Asia).
“It’s usually handed to players who make or create decisive goals, but if there ever is a time to give it to a defender, it is now.” he added.
Koeman admits that Lionel Messi is the best player in the world, but in order to win Ballon d’Or, a footballer needs a huge team trophy, that Van Dijk has, compared to Argentine star.
