Ronald Koeman has claimed Barcelona want to win trophies this season despite not knowing fully how their squad will shape up.
Despite signings Sergio Aguero, Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia, Emerson Royal, the Catalan giants are also experiencing major financial difficulties with reports that they still need to offload players before they can register new signings.
“We expect a lot. We still don’t know at the moment what the team will be because of the financial situation of the club,” Barca boss Koeman told club media. “We try to have the best squad possible but we are a big club, we are Barcelona and always the expectations are really high and we like that. We have the qualities for that to have a very good season again and win trophies for this season.”
Barcelona still keep their biggest earner Lionel Messi at the club despite the expiry of his contract and clubs including City and PSG being interested in signing him.
The Blaugranas captain is expected to have his commitment to the club announced as soon as it can be registered, and Koeman is counting on him being at the Nou Camp next season.
“It’s really important. We saw that last season, he had a difficult start in the beginning but he showed once again that he is the best in the world,” he said.
“He scored 30 goals and that makes a lot of points for the tam. He demonstrated in the Copa America finally with his national team and let’s hope that we can have an agreement for more years that we will see and also with people in the stadium. We expect once again that they can admire our best player.”
