Roger Ferderer is set to return to Clay Court for the first time since 2016. The Swiss has not played at all on clay since the Masters 1000 in Rome in 2016 where he lost in the third round to Dominic Thiem in straight sets.
Federer is just days away from playing on clay one more time when he plays in the 2019 Madrid Open and he appears nervous.
According to
Agence France-Presse, Federer said: "
I'm very excited. It's a good challenge, a good test. Confidence, I don't know, it's in no-man's land. I have to start from scratch."
Twenty-time Grand Slam winner has won three titles at the Madrid Open, two of which were won when the tournament changed from a hard to a clay court 10 years ago. The Swiss fears how he will fare this season.
"
I'm not very confident going into this clay court season, I can tell you that," he said. "I don't even remember how to slide any more. You know, I'm taking baby steps at this point. To be honest, I didn't play the one point, not one shot on clay last year. Three years ago I played not feeling great in Monaco and Rome and all that. So it's been so little that I really don't know what to expect."
