Roger Federer is hopeful that he will return to competitive action “very, very soon” following his long injury layoff. The 20-time Grand Slam winner’s last ATP match was at this year’s Australian Open as he underwent surgery on his knee in February.
After a setback, was forced to undergo a second operation in June. Federer admitted earlier this month that he was “in a race against time” to be fit.
However, with the season-opening Grand Slam changing its timeslot from January 18-31 to February 8-21 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Swiss has told organisers that he is optimistic about playing at Melbourne Park.
“Hey, it’s Roger here. I hope everybody is doing well in a difficult year,” he said. “I just wanted to thank you all for winning the Fans’ Favorite Award this year again. Thanks to ATP, to all the tennis fans out there voting for me, believing in me, and wanting to see me back on the tour.
“I’m training hard, making that possible and I hope I can play in front of all you guys very, very soon and happy holidays to everybody. Happy New Year and let’s hope it all gets better next year.
