Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has revealed he wanted Jurgen Klopp to take charge of his former side in summer of 2018.
Klopp has won two Bundesliga titles with Dortmund in 2011 and 2012 and reached Champions League final in 2013.
Watzke says that despite his desire to lure 52-year-old specialist back to Germany, he was convinced it would be not possible.
“I knew that Jurgen would [decline], that he will fulfill his contract in Liverpool,” Watzke wrote in his book (via Sky Sports)
“Jurgen has always fulfilled his contracts, but if you want to go new ways and we had to break new ground at BVB, then at least I had to ask Jurgen if he could possibly imagine that.
“I did not expect that at all, but I would not have forgiven myself for not asking him at that moment.” he added.
