Mason Mount has turned down a lucrative contract offer from Chelsea before agreeing to a £60 million transfer to Premier League rivals Manchester United, according to The Guardian, via Give Me Sport.
With only one year remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea finally accepted a bid of £55 million, plus add-ons worth £5 million, from United.
In an effort to retain their academy graduate, the Blues made a significant offer, nearly tripling Mount's current wage. The club was prepared to present him with a long-term contract worth £200,000 per week, whereas the 24-year-old midfielder currently earns £75,000 per week.
This would have amounted to a roughly 166% increase in his salary. However, United managed to secure Mount's services by offering him a five-year contract, with an additional year, worth £250,000 per week.
