Raheem Sterling opens up on VAR heartbreak - and telling his two-year-old son Man City had lost

Raheem Sterling’s late strike against Tottenham in the Champions Lague quarter-finals was ruled out by VAR. The England international believed he had sent Manchester City into the semi-final but the goal was ruled out due to Sergio Aguero being offside in the build-up. But Sterling now knows, the reaction of his two-year-old son proved the toughest part of the ordeal. “I remember before the game, saying: ‘this is the day. this is the day'," Sterling told Mirror Sport's John Cross in an exclusive interview . "And in the last seconds I’m thinking I’ve scored that goal, the World Cup final goal. I celebrated like that. Then I remember seeing the VAR and remember thinking: ‘Yeah, I think Sergio could have been offside…’ "I remember going home that night and my son was in the car. He’s only two now but absolutely loves football. He was kind of sleepy, then he woke up as I was bringing him upstairs and he goes: ‘Daddy score, Daddy win.’ And I went: ‘No, Daddy scored but we didn’t win today.’ That was horrible, absolutely horrible.” City will aim to complete a historic domestic treble by winning the FA Cup against Watford this weekend at Wembley.
