Premier League veteran star becomes free agent at 32

Manchester United's veteran goalkeeper David De Gea has become a free agent as his existing contract with the club ended on June 30, leaving his future at the club uncertain.

A previously agreed contract extension between the Spain international and the Red Devils was altered, causing both parties to pause and reassess the situation. Face-to-face discussions will not resume until after De Gea's wedding this weekend. The Spanish goalkeeper, who has been with United for 12 years and played in 545 games, won the Premier League Golden Glove last season with 17 clean sheets. Despite remaining in contact with the club, De Gea is now free to negotiate with other teams.

Manchester United had hoped for the 32-year-old to accept a substantial pay cut from his current £375,000-per-week deal, which he signed in 2019. Even with a reduced salary, De Gea's earnings would still place him among the top-paid goalkeepers, making it challenging for him to find similar terms elsewhere. However, if the Spanish keeper chooses to leave after his impressive tenure, it will present a problem for manager Erik ten Hag.

De Gea's departure would mark the end of an era, as he is the last remaining player from United's last Premier League title-winning squad and has won numerous individual accolades during his time at the club.
