The Premier League rule change that will come into effect next season

The International Football Association Board have approved a number of adjustments to the current Laws of the Game. Here are six rule changes which will be enforced in the Premier League in 2019/20. Handball Goals will now be ruled out in cases where the ball accidentally strikes a player's hand before crossing over the line and, if a player has accidentally handled the ball and created an advantage or subsequently scores, they will be penalised with a free kick. Free Kicks Attackers are no longer allowed in the wall at free kicks. The wall does have to contain at least three players however, at which point all attackers must be at least a metre away. IFAB hold pretty strong views on this one. "There is no legitimate tactical justification for attackers to be in the ‘wall’ and their presence is against the ‘spirit of the game’ and often damages the image of the game," an IFAB statement explained. Penalties It's not all good news for goalkeepers, however. Officials will be much more stringent when it comes to penalty kicks next season as keepers must have at least part of one foot on or in line with the goal-line when the spot kick is taken. In addition to this, keepers will also be prohibited from moving on the goal-line or from touching their goalposts. Substitutions In an attempt to reduce the amount of time-wasting that occurs during the later stages of matches, players won't be able to get away from taking themselves over to the opposite side of the pitch before being substituted. Players will now be made to leave the pitch at the nearest point on the touchline, preventing them from slowly walking the length of the pitch before being taken off. Cards for coaches  Managers will be awarded yellow and red cards for any poor behaviour on the touchline and if, in the event of a touchline melee for example, the offending individual cannot be identified for punishment, the senior coach who is in the technical area will be the default recipient. Drop Balls Next season we will not be seeing any contested drop balls and the ball will simply be returned to the team who last touched the ball before play was halted. If the game was stopped in the penalty area then the ball will be given to the goalkeeper. Substitutions From next season onwards, whenever a player is substituted, they no longer have to leave the field near to the dugouts. Instead they must leave the field at the nearest point, thus avoiding any pesky time-wasters who stroll off nonchalantly late on. How long will it be until someone doesn't pay attention and passes the ball to their teammate walking round the pitch perimeter though is another question.
