Phil Foden reacts to Andres Iniesta comparisons

Manchester City beat League One side Oxford United in the Carabao Cup Round three (3-0). Phil Foden was compared to Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta after his goal in Manchester City’s Carabao Cup win over Oxford United-with Boss Pep Guardiola saying he can be an “amazing” player of the club over the next decade. Foden (18 years, 120 days) is the first player born since the turn of the millennium to score a competitive goal for Manchester City in any competition. And now, the 18-year-old reacts to Andres Iniesta comparisons saying: “He is on a different planet!”. “I’m happy about that but Iniesta, come on, he is on a different planet,” said Foden, who was player of the tournament and scored twice in the final as England Under-17s won the World Cup in 2017. “So for them to call me is massive.” “It has not sunk in yet, it is an unbelievable feeling to get my first goal for City,” admitted Foden. “It meant a lot for me. “It was massive, getting these cup games and run outs whenever I can and just keeping improving and hopefully one day I can be starting a lot more games. “There are a lot of things still to improve, so I am just keeping my head down, and working hard and keep improving. “Possibly I need to improve in not giving as many balls away, but what happens when you play. You need to grow and be more mature, and I will get that as I get more games. “To be fair I still get the enjoyment assisting and scoring. I like to do both, and try and get both into my game. “Definitely, training with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva, players in the same position as me, I am learning every day from them, watching what they do, has really brought me on as a player as well. “Working with Pep as well has really helped a big part of my game, bringing it on, so too has (assistant manager) Mikel Arteta. “There is no need to rush. Pep knows what he is doing, I will play at the right time. He is good at bringing young players through, he has done it in his career before. “So I have to be patient. I’m still young, and still enjoying being there and learning at the moment. “I had a chance in the last Premier League game (playing the last 21 minutes against Cardiff) and I thought, when is my chance going to come? I just had to keep my head and keep moving and thankfully have got my first goal. “But goals are not the most part of playing well. Doing all the other basics, and all the other parts like off the ball, the goals will come when they come."
