Manchester City's Sergio Aguero is recovering after positive Covid-19 test and Pep Guardiola believes he will bounce back to “make the difference” in club's title challenge.
City's striker has “struggled” with fatigue after testing positive for the virus last week, when he has had to self-isolate at home.
However, Guardiola said Aguero has told medical staff that he is fighting back – and confidently predicted he will bring his considerable influence to bear in the title run-in.
“The first three or four days he struggled, felt so tired but today he feels good and much better,” said Guardiola.
“Now it’s time to test negative, see how he feels, but admitted that the after-effects of the virus – with some players finding lung capacity reduced – are unpredictable.
“I cannot tell you that, I don’t know how he’ll react, the Covid, the protocols.
“I’m so optimistic that he will give us the last months, from February or March and he’ll help us in the decisive moments, the goals and make the difference. I’m so confident it’s going to happen.
"Hopefully it’s going to happen, but Vincent had the quality of being two months out and could go out and play well.
“Sergio needs the special sharpness and steps to score a goal but it depends on him. We’ll see him on the training pitch and know if he’s fit or not.
“But hopefully he can help us with his special quality. That’s one of the best strikers ever – not just in England – I mean ever.”
