Pep Guardiola makes surprise claim about Manchester City's transfer budget in summer window

Pep Guardiola claimed Manchester City could not afford to buy a central defender this summer. Aymeric Laporte is facing a lengthy spell out after suffering a serious knee injury. Nicolas Otamendi is currently City’s only fit centre-back, following the failure to replace former skipper Vincent Kompany. “We could not buy like the opponents, or give what teams asked for these players,” said Guardiola. “Of course we spent a lot two seasons ago, but last season we bought one player. “This season it was all a little bit more, so we could not pay the money teams wanted. The club works incredibly well in all departments and sometimes we cannot afford it as other teams afford it and that is all. “We pay a lot of money for a lot of players, that is why we have a depth of squad with huge quality, but we cannot do [it all the time]. The club tells me, you have a limit, you cannot go forward’. Maybe in the future, but not now, you cannot do it. “I say, ‘okay’, you cannot do it, so we cannot do it, so we’re going with what we have. But sometimes, when that happens, the team unites better and we’re going to find solutions to do that. We will work – unfortunately, now we can’t because it’s the international break, but we’re going to work on it.”
