Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to sign a defensive midfielder to compete Nemanja Matic for the place in the team, according to
The Times.
The first player is Tottenham's Eric Dier, who, despite being an England international, is not 'homegrown' as he came through the ranks at Sporting Lisbon.
Dier, 25, has Champions League and World Cup experience and would provide a goal threat with his free-kick expertise. Spurs would demand a significant transfer fee to allow him to join a Premier League rival.
Solskjaer has also earmarked West Ham star Declan Rice, 20, as a player who would add steel to his midfield.
Finally, United are tracking Newcastle youngster Sean Longstaff.
They see the 21-year-old as one for the future, who could learn his trade from Matic. However, he was ruled out for the rest of the 2018–19 season following a knee ligament injury sustained in March.
