“No doubt” - Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher delivers Aston Villa verdict

Liverpool legend and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes that Aston Villa will have expected to have been involved in a relegation fight this season, despite spending big-money last summer. Following promotion, Villa boss Dean Smith was allowed to spend big to bolster his squad. But despite splashing out over £100m over the summer transfer window, the club now find themselves in danger of suffering relegation. Following their 4-0 defeat to Leicester City on Monday evening, Carragher has insisted that Villa are “underachieving” for the position they are in for the amount of money they have spent. Carragher told Sky Sports: "There is no doubt that Aston Villa spent a lot of money in the summer, a lot of money, and that is not to go down. You spend that amount of money to stay in the Premier League. "Now, I understand that people always say Fulham spent a lot of money and went down. Aston Villa had to spend a lot of money because I think a lot of players were out-of-contract and were moving on anyway. "So whether they were coming into the Premier League or not, they had to bring 10 or 11 players in. But they still spent a lot of money. "I think they will have always known they were in a fight but I don't think the owners or those spending the money, maybe the manager, would expect to go down this season. "So in some ways there has been an underachievement, certainly where they are in this moment."  Source: BirminghamMail Join us on Telegram!
