New signing Ferran Torres makes HUGE Champions League admission

Ferran Torres has officially made a move to Manchester City from Valencia. The Spain U21 international becomes Pep Guardiola's first summer signing, joining for an initial fee of £20.8m plus bonuses. The 20-year-old came through Valencia's renowned academy and scored four times in 34 appearances last season as they finished ninth in La Liga. Torres, speaking to Marca after signing his new City contract, says he hopes to improve under Pep Guardiola and explained how the move to Manchester came about as contract negotiations were Valencia were still ongoing. "It was a very nervous day," he said. "My agent was in Manchester with the club and he called me and said that they had reached an agreement and that he would play for City. It is a club to win everything and has the best coach in the world. I think that there I will improve and learn many things. Yes, it is true that they [Valencia] called very large teams. But I must keep that to myself." Torres also revealed details of his conversation with Guardiola. "It was a very exciting time for me," Torres said of his call with Guardiola. "He gave me a lot of peace of mind and congratulated me. That helped me a lot to calm down and make me want to go much more. I wanted to stay and we offered the club the conditions to do so. And two of the three... were not cheap. The economic one, in addition, was not above the possibilities of the club. I knew that Valencia is not in a position to pay the same as the big European clubs but I was able to lead the project and I wanted to be treated as such, that the club made an effort to retain me. They just didn't want to, period. "With City everything has been done very late. City first contacted chivalrously with Valencia and informed [them] that he was going to start talking to us. That is what he did from there, until reaching an agreement, and then negotiated with Valencia the transfer conditions. Until the very end we had the hope that Valencia would react to redirect the situation. But it was not like that." Looking ahead to his new challenge, Torres gave his thoughts on City's chances of winning the Champions League this season. He explained: "I need to work, adapt very quickly and earn the job. The more competition you have the better player you become. You have to always be at the highest level because if you don't go to the bench. "It is true that City played a great game at the Bernabéu, we know what team Real Madrid has, but I think they will not escape. City is always in the Champions League and is among the five best teams in the world and will always choose to win the Champions League." Source: MEN
