ECA chairman Andrea Agnelli has proposed changes to the Champions League which is set to be introduced in 2024.

According to El Partidazo de COPE and Radio MARCA, the new tournament will consist of 32 teams, 8 of which will be relegated to the Europa League for the next season.

The format will be:

  • 32 teams divided to 4 groups of 8 teams each (14 matchdays),
  • first 4 teams of each group will qualify for the round of 16,
  • the bottom teams of each group will be relegated to Europa League,
  • the 6th and 7th of each group will play a play-out in order to avoid relegation for the UEL.

This new format will be presented at a meeting in August in Monaco. La Liga and Premier League are strongly opposed to it.
