Nadal’s coach speaks out on Roger Federer’s chances in the clay-court season

Rafael Nadal’s coach Carlos Moya has spoken out on Roger Federer’s chances in the clay-court season. Ferderer is set to return to the French Open for the first time since 2015. The Swiss won his only Frenc Open crown in 2009 when he beat Sweden’s Robin Soderling to complete the career grand slam. The Swiss has not played at all on clay since the Masters 1000 in Rome in 2016 where he lost in the third round to Dominic Thiem in straight sets. Moya said: "You have to see his definitive calendar. So far it's Madrid and French Open, which are the tournaments that fit his conditions the most, especially the first one. Madrid is a quicker tournament, in the altitude, where you can hit two shots. And the French Open is at five sets, you will have to see how the first rounds go and if he gets tired. He is a player who would have won the French Open many times if there wasn't Nadal. Federer played several finals on clay and he always struggled against Rafa. It's a very natural surface for him and he will definitely play well. He will try to be aggressive like he did lately, although the risk is much bigger." Nadal is in the range of 400 clay court matches won and counting. The clay-court season that begins in earnest this week and picks up steam as it moves through Europe in the coming weeks — culminating in the French Open in late May/early June — promises to be both intriguing and unpredictable.
