Michael Edwards could accelerate Liverpool transfer plan to make stellar January signing

Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards could spend big on a new defender in the January window, according to European football expert Julien Laurens, who says it is a necessity that Liverpool add at least one defender in the winter window. The Reds are set to be without Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez for the majority of this season. Gomez underwent surgery on Thursday on the knee injury, as he joins Van Dijk on the sidelines to seriously stretch the resources available to manager Jurgen Klopp. Laurens does not think Liverpool can rely on Fabinho to play at the back for the remainder of the season. He told ESPN FC: "I think now with Gomez's injury, and unfortunately for him it looks like it's a very serious one, even if Fabinho comes back soon which should be the case, I don't think it's enough for the objectives and ambitions that Liverpool have this season. "Let's not forget as well that with [Joel] Matip's age and Van Dijk's age as well, there was going to be a point where they would have had to go and get another centre-back anyway for the years to come. "So I think you just move that up if you can in January and then either you go for someone that will help you and is maybe more of a short or mid-term solution, or you go for a long-term solution who's much younger and maybe more expensive, like [Dayot] Upamecano for example, and you invest as heavily as early as January. That would be for Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards to decide but certainly now the need is huge for them to go and get someone in January regardless."
