Mesut Ozil faces criticism for inviting Erdogan to his wedding

Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil is facing criticism in Germany for inviting Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan to his wedding this summer. Ozil and his fiancee Amine Gulse, 25, met with Erdogan at Istanbul's Ataturk airport, where the former Germany international invited the Turkish president in person to attend the event. https://twitter.com/Akparti/status/1106622638888226816 The chief of staff of German chancellor Angela Merkel told leading tabloid Bild that it "makes one sad" to see Ozil pose with Erdogan, whose regime has been condemned by human rights organisations.

Ozil and Gundogan were both born in Gelsenkirchen, Germany as third-generation emigrants. In July the Arsenal player said his meeting with Erdogan "wasn't about politics or elections, it was about me respecting the highest office of my family's country". Ozil is one of the most famous sporting figures in the world, with over 30million Facebook followers, 24m on Twitter and 19m on Instagram. ESPN recently ranked the former Germany international 19th on its world fame 100 list of sport's most famous names.
