Max Verstappen to Mercedes eyed as Toto Wolff plots 2022 Red Bull raid

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff is keen on bringing Max Verstappen to his team for 2022. He could even replace Lewis Hamilton, who has signed a one-year contract extension this week. Wolff has said that both Mercedes and Hamilton wanted only to extend the 36-year-old's deal by 12 months and to commit him for just the 2021 season. Hamilton's father Anthony told talkSPORT: "There's a realisation that he's getting older and wants to do other things in life. There's more to life than racing, but for now he’s happy to do another year." Amid suggestions Hamilton could retire from F1 in 12 months' time, the Daily Mail say Mercedes team principal Wolff is eyeing a move to steal Verstappen from Red Bull for 2022. Similar claims have been made by Dutch racing driver Tom Coronel, who told RacingNews365: "Mercedes is still very interested in Verstappen, they make no secret of it. We therefore know that there is regular contact."
