Manchester United's approach to Lionel Messi transfer this summer outlined

Manchester United are not expected to try to sign Lionel Messi from Barcelona, according to Sky Sports reporter Bryan Swanson. United are one of the several clubs linked with a move for the Argentina superstar, after Messi had told Barcelona he wants out of the Nou Camp. Manchester City are favourites to sign Messi. They are said to be Messi's preferred destination, to link up with former Barca boss Pep Guardiola and close friend Sergio Aguero. Reports have claimed United would be able to afford a deal for Messi. However, Swanson says it is very unlikely United would pursue the 33-year-old. "Interesting to hear the thoughts of Manchester United fans, especially on social media," Swanson said on the Transfer Show. "I'm just going to throw it out there, as we sit here right now, will Manchester United make an offer for Lionel Messi? I'm not expecting them to bid for him this summer. "We know the club are active, we've seen that in their pursuit of Jadon Sancho. My feeling is that, add together the business model, the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic, Messi's likely wage demands - I think that all but rules out a move for him. "I know earlier this week there were reports in Europe that they'd held talks with Messi's father, his representative. I just don't think right now we can expect a United bid for him, even if he is a six-time winner of the Ballon d'Or."
