The Manchester United shirt numbers new summer signings could wear

Manchester United are looking to strengthen their squad at the end of the season as they prepare to fight for the Premier League title. The Red Devils are keen to sign a new central defender, while there are also other areas of the squad. M.E.N. Sport take a look at the squad numbers which could be available for new signings this summer.:

As far as squad numbers go this is probably the highest profile one which needs filling. Marcos Rojo vacated the shirt at the end of last season, but no new central defender was purchased to occupy it. The number has been worn by Roy Keane, Nicky Butt and Andrei Kanchelskis in the past it is more synonymous with centre-backs such as Rio Ferdinand, Laurent Blanc and Ronny Johnsen.

Marcus Rashford's shirt number for two seasons, the number 19 usually signals a player on the fringes of the first-team. Dwight Yorke famously wore the number during his time at the club, while James Wilson and Danny Welbeck have also worn it this past decade.

Last worn by Timothy Fosu-Mensah, this shirt is expected to be vacant come the start of summer too. The number is steeped in history having been worn by Darren Fletcher, David Beckham and Paul Scholes. Perhaps it would be another good one for a rising academy star to possess.

It's Marouane Fellaini's famous shirt number.  Federico Macheda, Mikael Silvestre, Terry Cooke and Gary Neville are the only players to have also previously worn the shirt - and it safe to say that's a pretty mixed bag.

While there a number of players who do prefer a more obscure squad number, it is unlikely there will be much of a fight for any of these. Shirts which could potentially become available Nemanja Matic (31), Matteo Darmian (36) and Scott McTominay are the only players wearing shirt numbers beyond the mid-twenties, but themselves could switch to a lower number if the opportunity arises. Phil Jones (4), Juan Mata (8), Andreas Pereira (15), Ashley Young (18), Ander Herrera (21), Antonio Valencia (25) and Darmian (26) are all out of contract at the end of the season, and it remains to be seen if they will stay at the club. This could potentially open up the opportunity for some popular numbers to become available.
