Manchester United face a fresh injury setback as they prepare for their Premier League clash against Sheffield United this Saturday.
Despite a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Brentford just before the international break, United finds themselves trailing by five points in the race for the Champions League qualification spots. Their mission to bridge this gap takes them to South Yorkshire to take on Sheffield United.
However, there's been official confirmation from the club that Brazilian standout Casemiro will be absent from the upcoming match. This influential 31-year-old midfielder sustained an ankle injury while on international duty with the Brazilian national team last week.
Although Casemiro managed to participate in the match against Uruguay on Tuesday, Manchester United isn't willing to gamble on his fitness. As per the information provided on the club's official website, Casemiro is expected to return to training early next week.
Casemiro, a high-profile £70 million signing, has had a somewhat inconsistent start to the current season with Manchester United. However, he remains renowned for his prowess in winning tackles and duels, making his absence a considerable loss for the team as they prepare to face Sheffield United away from home this Saturday.
In Casemiro's absence, the midfield partnership may feature Sofyan Amrabat alongside Scott McTominay if manager Erik ten Hag decides to persist with a midfield duo. McTominay showcased his creative abilities in the previous match against Brentford, and his exceptional performance could earn him a starting role.
