Manchester United and Chelsea handed transfer boost

Manchester United and Chelsea have been handed a transfer boost as Napoli star Dries Mertens edges closer to exit. Mertens, who has been linked with United and Chelsea, will be able to leave for free in the summer, as his contract expires at the end of the season. Chelsea made a £6million bid for Mertens, however, Napoli rejected it. According to the Daily Mail, the talks between Napoli and Mertens to extend the player’s contract are not going well. La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Mertens wants €7.5million (£6.3m) per year for two seasons, but Napoli's current proposal is stuck at €4m (£3.3m) plus another €1m (£845,000) in performance-related bonuses.
