The Real Madrid winger participated in an official ceremony in Madeira on Wednesday, where the local airport has been renamed after Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo is a local legend as he is a great example of a success thanks to hard work.
The decision to rename the airport was made right after Portugal won the EURO 2016. Cristiano was subbed off in the first half because he was unable to play due to injury, however the player was key for the national team’s success.
‘Thank you very much to the president of the regional government Miguel Albuquerque for having had the courage and the firmness to do it.
‘My friend, I never asked for this, but I’m not a hypocrite, and I’m happy and honoured. I know some people do not agree and I know some people who are not here would be happy for this moment.
‘I will try to dignify Portugal and especially Madeira with a spirit of sacrifice, dignity and passion.’, said Ronaldo.
