Luke Thompson took to Instagram to issue a statement after his move to Canterbury was confirmed. The England prop was quoted in the Bulldogs’ announcement this morning, but Saints’ statement that followed did not include any parting words from him.

Thompson has posted on Instagram thanking the St Helens’ players, staff and fans, while noting that it was always his intention to fulfil his contract. He also did not comment on Saints chairman Eamonn McManus claims that he refused to take a pay cut. He wrote:

“I wish to say a massive thank you to all of the players, staff and fans of St. Helens RLFC, who have all supported me through my career and I wish you all every success for the future.

“I do believe it is important for me to put on record that the 2020 season was always about me fulfilling my contract and completing the season at Saints and going out on a high.

“Unfortunately, due to the current pandemic, we have all been without rugby for months with no sign at present of it returning, which has left our club and sport facing financial difficulties.

“When the opportunity arose for me to switch to the NRL earlier than planned, a move that would make a significant financial contribution to our club, I agreed to the transfer.

“I have loved every moment of my time at Saints and it has been a privilege to have been a small part of this great club.

“Once a Saint always a Saint!”
