Kevin Phillips believes Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum may have already agreed to join a new club. Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the pundit suspects “something has been done in the background” that will be announced in January. The Athletic‘s James Pearce revealed on Friday that the club were “resigned” to the 30-year-old leaving the club on a free next summer. According to Football Insider, Wijnaldum has rejected a contract offer from the Merseyside club but will remain at Anfield until the completion of the 2020/21 campaign. Phillips said: “It would not surprise me if something has already been agreed. Legally it cannot be made public but it would not surprise me if something has been done in the background. “I am reading that he has turned down a lucrative new deal so there must be something in the pipeline. It would not surprise me if he signs a pre-contract in January or if he leaves in January. It is a shame for Jurgen Klopp because Wijnaldum has been a top player for Liverpool. It is another issue that Klopp needs to deal with come the new year.”
