Lionel Messi situation: Barca confirm player’s intention, legal action possible

Barcelona have confirmed they got a burofax from Lionel Messi. The player has written about his intentions to leave the club this summer.  Messi wants to activate the clause so that he can terminate his contract with the club.  However, the situation isn’t as easy as it seems. Barcelona board of directors will have an extraordinary meeting, so that they can discuss the situation. Josep Bartomeu, the Catalan club president, reportedly insists that Messi should pay 700 mln euros, if he wants a contract termination, Guillem Balague reports.  The Argentinian international, meanwhile, has made it clear. He will leave the club, if Bartomeu stays. Legal action between the board and the player possible.  More information to follow Lionel Messi is ready to activate the clausula to end his contract with Barcelona (unilaterally), Tancredi Palmeri reports, referring to the Argentinian media outlet TyC Sports.  Palmeri posted on twitter: “BOOM! According to Argentinian TyC Sports, Messi has officially communicated to Barcelona that he will activate a clause to end unilaterally his contract!” The deadline day for the release clause execution has passed (June 30). But Messi wants to use FIFA regulations that were introduced due to the pandemic and the impact it had on the football season.  The talks about Messi leaving Barcelona heated up after Barcelona lost to Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals of the Champions League. The Catalan side are preparing a reconstruction of the squad.  Despite this, Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu mentioned that Messi is untouchable and the new head coach Ronald Koeman wants to build the team around the 6-time Ballon d’Or winner. Manchester United and Manchester City are among the clubs reportedly interested in signing Messi. Now it could become an easier task, as Messi will not have a contract with Barcelona and his release clause (700 mln euros) won’t matter anymore.
