Jurgen Klopp explains why he let Solanke and Clyne leave the club
Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp has explained why he let Dominic Solanke and Nathaniel Clyne leave the club.
Both players signed for Bournemouth. Liverpool sold Solanke for £18 m, while Clyne signed a loan deal until the end of the season.
On Solanke
“Probably not. They are two different cases anyway. Football is a business obviously but we also need to care about people. For Dom it was absolutely right to go . It was a bit unlucky for him because the moments when there was space for him to come into the team, he had injuries and in other moments the squad was full and we had other options.
“He trained pretty well but you cannot stay confident over that long period, especially in that age group and he didn't play at lot for Chelsea. He needed to play football.
On Clyne
“As a manager, to have an option like Clyney is good. When I came in here, Clyney felt like he played in every game, he was always fit and could always play and was a very important part of the squad and the team. Then he got the back problem and nobody knew how long it would take, and it took quite a while.
“In that time it changed. Joe was fit, Trent came up, and Clyney is at an age where he need to play and wants to play. He came in and asked if he could go, I thought about it and then said 'yes, you can'. Because we have other options, younger boys coming up and all that stuff.
“You can always keep a player but to keep him in the right shape and right amount of confidence, that's not always easy. You have to play more then Clyney was. That it was also to Bournemouth was more a coincidence than anything else.
