Jose Mourinho explains why he dropped Romelu Lukaku against Everton

Romelu Lukaku has been failing to get on the scoresheet for United since last month’s win at Watford. And he was named among the substitutes a Manchester United went up against his former club, where he spent four years. Speaking in an interview Mourinho revealed why he dropped Lukaku to the bench with Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford named to the squad instead. "The reason is that he is playing a lot of matches and, lately, not just not scoring goals but, fundamentally, not showing lots of confidence," Mourinho said. "Sometimes, we decide the best thing for the player is not to be on the pitch but to be protected and to be away from the initial pressure. "If, later, he comes into the game, he can probably come with a positive feeling of trying to make a difference and be back to normality. "And normality for Romelu is scoring lots of goals and, because of that, Romelu is under a bit of pressure." Lukaku has scored 31 goals in 65 games since moving to Old Trafford from Goodison Park. Man United beat Everton 2-1 yesterday thanks to goals from Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial.
